Nature-Based Therapy

Nature-based therapy: Partnering with the restorative power of nature to facilitate healing.

Nature-based therapy, also known as ecotherapy, is a holistic therapeutic approach that integrates the healing power of the natural environment into mental health and wellness practices. Did you know that just 90 minutes of walking in a natural setting decreases rumination and activity in the prefrontal cortex which is the part of the brain associated with depression and anxiety.

By encouraging individuals to connect with nature through outdoor activities, mindfulness exercises, and group experiences, this method aims to support overall well-being and personal growth.

Nature-based therapy at Catalyst Mindfulness can take many forms, including guided walks, forest bathing, mindful observation of the outdoors as well as creating impermanent nature art which integrates ritual, art and nature. It is designed to be accessible and adaptable, making it suitable for a diverse range of participants and needs. We can also bring nature inside and have powerful connections to nature while in an indoor setting or even on Zoom calls.

Benefits of Nature-Based Therapy

  • Enhances Physical and Mental Health: Activities such as hiking, gardening, or simply walking outdoors encourage movement and physical exercise, which contribute to improved cardiovascular health, better sleep, and increased energy. Regular exposure to nature and green spaces results in 30% reduced risk of anxiety and 25% reduced risk of depression.

  • Promotes Mindfulness and Presence: Nature-based therapy fosters mindfulness by encouraging individuals to engage their senses and be present in the moment. This can help individuals develop coping skills, resilience, and self-
    awareness.
  • Supports Social Connection: Group activities in nature can strengthen bonds between participants, encourage teamwork, and reduce feelings of isolation. Shared experiences outdoors often lead to improved communication and trust.
  • Encourages Personal Growth: Nature-based therapy can provide a safe space for self-reflection, personal growth, and transformation. The challenges and beauty of the natural world can inspire new perspectives and foster emotional healing.
  • Accessible and Inclusive: Suitable for people of all ages and backgrounds, nature-based therapy is particularly beneficial for those experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, or chronic illness. Families and groups can also find value in this therapeutic method.

Engaging in nature-based therapy can be as simple as taking regular walks in a park, practicing mindfulness outdoors, or joining one of my guided therapeutic groups. Experiences can be tailored to meet individual needs and goals, providing a powerful, evidence-based path to improved mental, emotional, and physical health.
